Hello Deepwater!

During a conversation with my significant other we shared our thoughts of what the below scripture meant to us. It seems pretty self explanatory but I'm still somewhat in the "HUH"  ???  mode.

I want to get your take/interpretation of what it means to you.

1 Corinthians 7: 1-2 (New Life Version)

How A Husband And Wife Should Live
1You asked me some questions in your letter. This is my answer. It is good if a man does not get married.

2 But because of being tempted to sex sins, each man should get married and have his own wife. Each woman should get married and have her own husband.

Blessings to you,

I believe that it is self explanatory.  If you can not get married, then don't.  If you can't control yourself, then that is a good sign that you don't need to stay single, because you will fall into sin eventually.

My dad told me that last week.  He said that if I didn't think that I could control myself, then I needed to go on and find a wife and get married.  I think that most people should be married, and there are only a few who are able but don't.  But I think that Paul is saying that if you don't have the gift of continual celibacy, then get married, so that you stay out of sexual sin.

What is your huh about?

Thank you Christianthought for your reply.

For a lack of a better word I used "HUH" to say I was still somewhat confused.  As self explanatory as the scripture is I guess my being confused stemmed from me wanting to dig deeper into it  :-\. You know how we do.

"Well what exactly does God mean by this? - or -  Did He really mean that? - or -  How come it says that?

Just trying to dig deeper into something that's really not that deep. That's all.  ;)

Blessings to you,

Purity....

Hi Purity,

It is quite an interesting statement from Paul... very black or white.  I remember reading it myself and thinking "why" should we not want to get married, because it seemed like this is what God ordained.

If you read further on, I believe an answer can be found further down in chapter 7.  Check out verses 32-35.  Paul states that an unmarried man or woman is to be "concerned about the Lord's affairs - how he/she can please the Lord".  He goes on to say that remaining single gives a person the ability to have "undivided devotion" to the Lord.

I believe that singles can and should be the most active people in the church.  For lack of a better term, we are the "spouses" that should be taking care of God's affairs, his house, his concerns.  Nevertheless, we are mostly concerned with how not to being single, how to have guilt free sex, how to make more money... all while God's needs go unmet.  Many singles then think that once married, it will be no problem taking on the challenges of a spouse... when it was almost to challenging help take care of God's affairs!

In our devotion to the Lord, however, we cannot be distracted by passions and lusts; therefore, he says go ahead and get married if this is the case.  In marriage, we must know that our spouse comes first... leaving God as something to do afterwards.  Isn't it funny how after marriage, so many people then get interested in serving God!

Hope this helps,

Theresa McFaddin

I'm checking in late with my reply on this topic.

I understand what Paul is saying and yes it can send you into a thought provoking mode. However I don't think anyone should run into marriage because of sexual temptation. Use wisdom and if you don't have it ask for it!
